  • I Don’t Have to Go to Work Everyday.

I’ve just been back from the gathering with four of my students in the past. One of them has just finished his master degree course. Another has been a primary school teacher for 1 year. The other two have been engineerers for two years. Christine (Miss Leung) also joined our gathering tonight. Our topics were not only the school life in the past but also the present life. I was surprised by certain things I found from the conversation.

    1. The three who are now working are planning to get married in one or two years. They are only 20 something. Is it because people nowadays become mature earlier or people nowadays are good planners?

    2. The two engineerers are fed up by their work and seem that they become indifferent to daily life. Fortunately, I’ve found that they still have visions in their work and they feel bored only because they focus too much on the current reality.

    3. All of them have grown up. It seems that they have grown up in only one blink of my eyes. But let me clarify myself. I don’t feel I am old.

    4. I am glad that they still feel interested in having dinner with me. Whether they have gratitude to me or not is not my concern. I have had a wonderful night talking with them. We all really enjoyed the companion and the conversation. I am very very contended that they still like talking to me.

Some people say that teaching is a career that you cannot see the outcome. First, I don’t think that the outcome is everything I have in my career. I think the process is also very important and you can really enjoy the process without seeing the outcome. Second, I still have chance to see the outcome. It may not be the results of the open exams of that school year. It is the contentment I can have when I meet my students again after they have left me.

I haven’t been bored so far in my life. I find every day full of hope and possibility. Well, life is harsh and difficult. This is an undeniable truth. But I am a teacher. Perhaps I am not a great teacher. But being a good teacher is always my passion. “Choose a job you like. Then you don’t need to go to work everyday.” I am glad I’ve found my passions in my daily life.
